Master of Arts and Master of Science

Master of Science

Requirements for the Master of Science (M.S.) degree are thirty semester hours of graduate courses, including a thesis (5V99) and at least twelve semester hours from the Ph.D. core courses (PHY 5320, 5330, 5331, 5340, 5360, 5370 and 5371). The Physics Department does not have a foreign language requirement for the M.S. degree.

Students are required to register for PHY 5180 (colloquium) each semester, until two semester hours have been completed.

Master of Arts

Requirements for the Master of Arts (M.A.) are thirty-six semester hours of graduate courses, including eighteen semester hours of 5000-level courses, twelve of which must be selected from the Ph.D. core courses (PHY 5320, 5330, 5331, 5340, 5360, 5370 and 5371). In addition, an oral examination or the department's Ph.D. qualifying exam must be passed. The Physics Department does not have a foreign language requirement for the M.A. degree. The M.A. degree does not require a thesis.

Students are required to register for PHY 5180 (colloquium) each semester, until two semester hours have been completed.

Physics MS or MA with a specialty in Environmental Physics

The department of Physics also offers the M.A. and M.S. degree with a specialty in environmental physics. In addition to the admission requirements for the Master's degree in Physics, the following regulations also apply:

  • The student's advisory committee shall include one member of the physical science faculty, active in the program of the Department of Environmental Studies.
  • A minimum of eighteen hours of graduate-level physics (twelve semester hours of 5000-level physics) is required.
  • Six semester hours of graduate-level course work in environmental studies are required.
  • Six semester hours of research (PHY 5V99) are required for the thesis with the research problem area in environmental physics.

Additional information concerning the M.A. and M.S. degrees with a specialty in environmental physics may be obtained from the chairperson of the department or the graduate program director.
