Master of Arts and Master of Science

Master of Science

Requirements for the Master of Science (M.S.) degree are thirty semester hours of graduate courses, including a thesis (5V99) and at least twelve semester hours from the Ph.D. core courses (PHY 5320, 5330, 5331, 5340, 5360, 5370 and 5371). The Department of Physics and Astronomy does not have a foreign language requirement for the M.S. degree.

Students are required to register for PHY 5180 (colloquium) each semester, until two semester hours have been completed.

Master of Arts

Requirements for the Master of Arts (M.A.) are thirty-six semester hours of graduate courses, including eighteen semester hours of 5000-level courses, twelve of which must be selected from the Ph.D. core courses (PHY 5320, 5330, 5331, 5340, 5360, 5370 and 5371). In addition, an oral examination or the department's Ph.D. qualifying exam must be passed. The Department of Physics and Astronomy does not have a foreign language requirement for the M.A. degree. The M.A. degree does not require a thesis.
